Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. It was clear from the SMR that the archaeological potential was generally good to high. No archaeological material had been found specifically from the site, although this was as likely to have been due to a lack of archaeological survey during earlier phases of development, as to an absence of deposits. Evidence from previous archaeological investigation at Princess Royal Sandpit suggested that occupation evidence would be present on the higher ground. The present site may have still retained evidence of occupation associated with the prehistoric and Roman material recovered from the evaluation trenches to the south of the Princess Royal pub. SMR 1745 and 2176 illustrated the recovery of Mesolithic and Neolithic material directly south of the development area. Early cartographic evidence revealed that prior to the original Princess Royal pub on the site, the land was an open undeveloped field bordering 'Guildford Road'. The development covered an area of c.0.5675 ha, the majority of which had escaped major development to an extent where any archaeological evidence that may have existed would have been destroyed. Therefore further evaluation in the form of trial trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)]
