Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping and the excavation of foundation trenches for a car-park and church hall, at a site which lay immediately south of a boundary wall enclosing a church. The church had formerly been part of Sele Priory, an alien Benedictine house founded in 1075 on the site of a Saxon church. A Saxon cemetery lay to the south of the church, and a number of medieval saltern mounds had been recorded in the surrounding area. Excavations in 1966 had revealed the masonry foundations of conventual buildings grouped around a cloister, unusually on the north side of the church. During the watching brief, no features or artefacts of archaeological significance were observed. It was concluded that the southern perimeter boundary of the priory may have lain beneath the modern churchyard wall, with the main focus of the monastic complex being to the north of the church.
