Abstract:
An excavation and a watching brief were carried out prior to redevelopment at a site where earlier evaluation had revealed a complex of archaeological deposits. Some of the lowest deposits found at the site contained flint artefacts and a probable Bronze Age sherd, and thus may have been of prehistoric date. 12th century pottery and a Saxon sherd were recovered from one of the lowest contexts in the main excavation area. 12th-14th century pottery was also found. A stone wall constructed in the 14th century on sloping, marshy ground had probably functioned as a revetting wall. Large pieces of wood provided further evidence of revetting. A later building had used the wall to form a strong northern side. Its walls included moulded stone blocks derived from a major 13th century building; a possible source may have been Chertsey Abbey. Sill walls relating to the building may have partly been a 16th century rebuild. Floor levels associated with the building were revealed, and possible evidence of iron-smithing activity was recorded around a hearth. A second possible hearth and possible partition walls were found. Post-medieval features of 16th-17th century date cut through earlier deposits, and may have been associated with the building, which was thought to have survived until the 18th century. [AIP]
