Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on groundworks associated with the construction of part of the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk. This involved the reduction in level of a sharp rise or mound in the ground surface. Topsoil sealed a buried topsoil-like deposit, which sealed a mixed dump of clay, sand, silt and mortar with frequent inclusions of building material and some domestic debris. The dump was 19th century in date, though some brick inclusions could have been from earlier (18th century) buildings. It was probable that the upper part of the 'mound' at least was created in the 19th century as part of path creation or landscaping within Kensington Gardens. The dumped material that formed the bulk of the mound appeared to have been demolition/waste material used for this purpose. [Au(abr)] |
