Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the groundwork associated with the erection of a single storey extension to Peppering Eye Farm (a 17th century farm with attached house). An archaeological condition was attached to the planning permission because the site lay within a 17th-19th century gunpowder mill site and a Romano-British ironworking site.\r\nThe area of the extension was found to have been heavily disturbed by a former barn (c. 20th century) and garden outbuildings. However, one small area of concentrated charcoal and iron slag was recorded, although this had been partially cut by the barn foundations and a drain. No artefacts were recovered from the charcoal spread and the topsoil was found to contain quantities of 18th-19th century brick and tile fragments. The iron slag was of a heavy type usually associated with Romano-British workings and it is likely that this feature was a truncated slag dump from a nearby furnace. [Au(adp)] |
