Abstract: |
An archaeological condition was placed on the planning permission for the development, as it lay adjacent to a known early Saxon inhumation cemetery and in close proximity to a Roman villa. The watching brief maintained during the groundwork associated with the construction of the garden building. This consisted of three foundation trenches 2.5m long, 0.25m wide and 0.5m deep. All showed a layer of topsoil (former ploughsoil) 0.2m deep containing 20th century brick/tile and pottery, characteristic of a manuring spread. Below the topsoil was a yellow/brown clay natural containing occasional sand nodules. None of the trenches revealed archaeological features, although trenches 2 and 3 cut through two shallow hollows containing flint nodules. These features were likely to be either former tree holes or natural periglacial features. [Au(adp)] |
