Abstract: |
An investigation was undertaken to determine the route of a sluice-way or by-pass channel which was thought to run from a point upstream of the Thorp Arch weir on the River Wharf, to an outlet immediately downstream of the weir, within the remains of The Dam House. The removal of a portion of the blocking at the downstream tunnel opening revealed the backfill which had been placed in the sluice channel after the removal of the tunnel roof and partial demolition of the walls at this point. Further trenches along the line of the sluice proved that beyond the first trench it had been totally demolished and backfilled with limestone hardcore, with no stonework remaining. The route of the sluice was visible for a large part of its length as a linear depression in the ground surface. [Au(adp)] |
