Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken after an assessment of the proposed route of the new road identified five known or potential sites of archaeological interest. One of the potential sites was seen to have been extensively disturbed by quarrying; the remaining four were further investigated by limited field evaluation. The results of the evaluation were largely disappointing, nothing of further interest was found at the find site of two flint flakes (ST 462 368), and the investigation of soilmarks at ST 446 362 and ST 453 363 demonstrated them to be insubstantial features of comparatively recent date, probably related to surface drainage. At ST 455 366 soilmarks and fieldname evidence suggested the possibility of an early (pre-conquest medieval) defended enclosure. Only a single boundary ditch was located and excavated; this produced very few finds, but these included a fiddle-headed horseshoe nail of probable early medieval date. [Au(abr)] |
