Abstract:
An evaluation and a brief desk-top study were undertaken in advance of the proposed construction of a new wing at Langshott Manor. The desk-based assessment revealed that the site had been identified as a possible medieval moated manor, although no archaeological material had been recovered from it and none had been recorded in the vicinity. A second possible medieval moated site lay to the north. During the evaluation, a substantial archaeological feature which had been infilled during the post-medieval period was revealed. Material recovered from it included fragments of post-medieval brick and tile. The feature was considered likely to have been a pond, shown to the east of the Manor House on a 19th century map. It was noted that it was a matter of conjecture whether this pond and two others which had been incorporated into the present day lake represented the remains of a medieval moat. The lack of medieval deposits suggested either that the pond had been cleaned out prior to the infilling process, thus removing the medieval layers from this possible remnant of the moat, or that there had been no moat and the ponds had always simply been ponds. It was concluded that the construction of the new wing would probably not disturb any archaeological layers other than a succession of post-medieval infills, and layers of soil relating to landscaping. It was recommended that no further archaeological work should be undertaken. [Au(adp)]
