Abstract: |
The hospital was built on land, which had previously been used as 'waste' since at least the late 12th century when, as a royal manor, it had been included in the extent of Windsor Great Park. As a result of its status a good deal of tree cover was maintained and the area was used for pannage and pasture. By the 18th century small areas were being settled and cultivated as people encroached in parcels of common. Knaphill grew up as a 'squatter' settlement and there was an encroachment of nine acres included in the purchase of land for the hospital. Apart from that small area, the land on which it stood was likely to have remained undisturbed from the medieval period except for clay and gravel pits sporadically dug for the purposes of potting, brick-making or road repair. Barrows at Chobham and West End were good evidence for the presence of Bronze Age activity and the area may have formed an integral part of a seasonally exploited landscape. [Au(abr)] |
