Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in the south-east corner of the foundations of a demolished range of hotel buildings (post-medieval) in advance of a proposed development. The evaluation exposed a sequence of post-medieval and modern features that surprisingly provided information on the medieval buildings formerly present on the site. Features included a large pit, probably of 15th century date but could have been medieval in date. Material remains of the previous medieval and post-medieval buildings in the site were recorded as well as evidence for landscaping in the 18th century. A limestone slab which covered a stone built chamber which provided access to a culvert was exposed, probably dated to the 18th century. [Au(adp)] |
