Abstract: |
The proposed development site, lying within the eastern area of Brockham Park, was comprised of an 0.4ha open area of remediated land, on which Brockham Park Research Laboratories previously stood. Planning permission had been granted by Mole Valley District Council for the development of the site. The review of documentary, geological, archival and cartographic sources indicated that the potential for archaeological activity in the area was largely unknown. Only minor previous archaeological research had been conducted in the vicinity, due in part to the relatively undeveloped nature of the locality. The site did not lie within an Area of Archaeological Constraint, as identified by the Local Council. The site's previous usage as a research facility had led to chemical contamination and the subsequent remediation strategy. This had resulted in the truncation of stratigraphical soil horizons to the level of natural clay. Therefore, any extant discreet archaeological features would have suffered acute levels of disturbance, and would have probably been destroyed. On this basis AOC advised that any further archaeological investigations were unlikely to reveal evidence of archaeological remains. [Au(abr)] |
