Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in connection with a planning application for a proposed new extension to the hotel. Initially, geophysical surveys were carried out but proved unsuccessful, although a single linear anomaly was detected which may have been a ditch. Three trial trenches revealed a 19th century kitchen block, the remains of an icehouse, two brick culverts, and a ditch or gully that contained pottery dating to the 14th century. A subsequent desk-based assessment suggested that the levelling up associated with the culverts and the monastic channel infilling may have occurred in the period between 1690 and 1778. An earthen bank around the present car park probably dated to between 1849 and 1886 and the demolition of the culverts and icehouse was likely also to have dated from this period.[Au(abr)] |
