Abstract: |
An excavation was carried out at the site of the Seaweed Hut, a structure which had been demolished in 1967. The earliest known reference to the hut was on an Admiralty Chart of 1783, although it was thought to have been of earlier date. The site lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. The excavation was carried out with the aim of providing local people with an opportunity to become involved in local archaeology; the archaeological deposits were also threatened by landscaping works. The excavation revealed part of a timber wall, which was probably a rebuild of the hut's western wall. Beach deposits with evidence of 20th century activity were also excavated; this activity had probably been associated with use of the hut. Features included the possible base of a bonfire, and the possible bases of concrete posts, perhaps forming a fence-line. A number of prehistoric worked flints were recovered during fieldwalking in the vicinity of the excavation site. [AIP] |
