Abstract: |
A substantial amount of information was collected concerning the town, it probably having developed from a small rural village in the Saxon period. St. Mary's Walk has a recorded history for over three hundred years, the majority of it being in the form of almshouses built by church wardens. They were cleared in 1890 and subsequently the land was used as allotments and then allowed to grow over. An archaeological evaluation of the site was recommended.[AIP] |
