Abstract:
The excavation of seven service trenches was monitored. Hall Farm stood on the site of the former Manor of North Ockendon, a moated red brick building constructed in the 16th century, with additions made during the 18th and 19th centuries before it was damaged by bombing in World War Two and later demolished. Most of the farm buildings currently standing dated from the 16th -18th centuries, as did some of the garden walls. To the south west of the area monitored the trenching revealed two brick wall footings on an east west alignment. To the east and running perpendicular to these was a smaller wall, with an associated flagstone floor. All were constructed bricks of 17th-18th century date. To the northwest and close to the remains of the old moat a small ditch was encountered. This was on a north-south orientation and was truncated by a large driven post. Approximately 6m to the north-east of this post a raft of timbers was observed, sealed by a layer of re-deposited natural. All of these features were sealed by a substantial layer of rubble overlain by a thick layer of made ground to the south and west. The timber raft was related to the consolidation of waterlogged areas of the site. The driven post was difficult to interpret in isolation, although it seemed likely that it was associated with the moat that lay a few metres to the west, as did the adjacent ditch. The foundation walls and floor were almost certainly related to the Manor House and the demolition material represented the demolition of the Manor House in recent times. [Au(abr)] (Au(abr)]
