Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation and excavation programme was undertaken in advance of construction works on the gas pipeline. The pipeline route across the River Den passed through Walton and exploratory geophysical survey within the pipeline easement by GSB Prospection in March 2000 had identified a number of anomalies of possible archaeological significance. A series of 22 trial trenches over some of these anomalies revealed Iron Age settlement on the south-west side of the river, whilst anomalies on the east site in trenches machined by RSK appeared to be natural. An area 6m wide by 168m long across the settlement was therefore excavated in advance of the insertion of the gas pipe. The settlement site (Area E) revealed a major boundary ditch, a large pit group, enclosure gullies and a charcoal spread overlain by a rubble platform enclosed within a semi-circular gully. Large quantities of fuel ash slag were found in associated with this unusual feature, which may have been associated with cremation or perhaps metalworking. Three human burials were located in pits outside of the entrance of the semi-circular enclosure, two of the skulls having cows' teeth placed over their eye sockets. Articulated animal bone was found in association along with large quantities of pottery. A large assemblage of Middle/Late Iron Age pottery was recovered from the site, together with animal bone and some earlier prehistoric flintwork. A programme of environmental analysis included the retrieval of a large quantity of soil samples from the ditches, gullies and especially the pits. Subsequent geophysical survey undertaken by the Museum in July 2000 outside of the pipeline easement had revealed extensive anomalies indicative of settlement. The survey depicted buildings and enclosures which were likely to have been relatively well preserved, apparently aligned either side of the excavated boundary ditch. [Au(abr)] |
