Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of an office development identified that there was little or no evidence to suggest that the area had been settled at any time prior to the medieval period. Although the possibility of medieval usage could not be discounted, it was generally assumed that the area on this side of Sydenham Road had developed as a suburb of Guildford during and after the 17th century. It was noted that more recent development of the site was likely to have removed all or most of the near surface deposits of archaeological interest, and that any deeper deposits would have been damaged. It was concluded that the site had a moderate archaeological potential. A watching brief during works involving ground disturbance was recommended. [AIP] |
