Abstract: |
The excavation of a buried soil, sealed beneath the defensive town bank revealed artefactual evidence of earlier settlement predating the Late Saxon town. A large collection of flint was thought to have dated from the Early Bronze Age and both Roman and Early Saxon pottery was found. Although fragments of Late Saxon and early medieval pottery were also found, there was insufficient to date the construction of the ditch and bank. Attempts to identify remains of the town wall in situ proved inconclusive. [Au] |
