Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that the present village of Mill Hill lay within the parish of Hendon, the boundaries of which had largely been established by the 10th century. Very little evidence of prehistoric or Roman activity had been recorded in the area; Mesolithic flint artefacts had been recovered at a site 1.2km to the south-east, but no other prehistoric remains had been recorded. Excavations in the area had revealed sections of a metalled road, associated with 'native' wares and 1st-2nd century AD pottery. The central and eastern parts of the site had been occupied by gas works since c. 1862 and c. 1900 respectively, although the western area, used as a sports field, appeared to have remained as open ground. It was concluded that the site had only a low archaeological potential, and that this was limited to the undisturbed area. [AIP]
