Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during groundworks on land at Asgarby Hall Farm for the construction of a new lake. The lake was to be sited across the positions of at least two former ponds, sometimes identified as fishponds; a total of four ponds were known marked on the map (revised prior to 1930) but had been backfilled by the end of World War II. No evidence for a medieval or earlier series of ponds was found on the site. Fragments of pottery recovered ranged from possible 13th to 18th century date (mostly being of 16th-17th century wares) and represented medieval spreading of farmyard material for fertiliser. Daub together with brick fragments recovered in the SE part of the new lake were thought to have been imported onto the site after demolition of buildings elsewhere, being used as hardcore spread at a field entrance. The exact purpose of a brick-side structure revealed at the southern side of the field was not identified although it could have served a post-medieval fishpond, a watermill, tanning ponds or sheep-washing ponds. A single timber upright was tentatively identified as the remains of a partly removed telegraph pole although a very slight possibility remained that it formed part of a medieval fishpond bank structure.
