Abstract:
An archaeological assessment, setting out additional archaeological data relating to the proposed quarry extension site, was undertaken followng a previous assessment in 1994. This assessment identified five additional sites, all of post-medieval or moden date which did not provide any further implications for the development of the site. The area of the proposed extension was commented on indirectly in the original desk-based study as much of the land currently occupied by the quary was in the ownership of Broadbridge Farm in 1840. The land was shown as Orchard in 1890, remnants of which had survived on the site to this day. The study also added that 'the presence of settlement at Broadbridge and West Lears Farm in the medieval period could not be ruled out solely on the absence of documentary references'. In conclusion, it was suggested that the area may have included remians of former medieval occupation associated with an earlier settlement at the site. The presence of palaeolithic artefacts within the gravel was also suggessted from earlier finds discussed in the original assessment. [Au(adp)]
