Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of field surface collection over an area of 50 hectares. The exercise recovered burnt flint (generally regarded as an indicator of prehistoric activity), and worked flint in very low quantities across the whole of the area. Assessment of the worked material showed the majority to comprise cortical, primary flakes, possibly of Bronze Age date, but with apparently earlier material (including two blades and two dubious chipped flint axes) also present. It was concluded that the assemblage had accumulated over a lengthy period of time from the Early Neolithic onwards. A single sherd of probable Late Bronze Age pottery and a single sherd of medieval pottery were also recovered, but otherwise only post-18th century ceramics were found. The distribution of the finds was plotted and assessed. Only weak spacial patterning was encountered, and a comparison between the distribution of modern finds and prehistoric material suggested that at least some of the observed variation was due to factors affecting the general recovery.
