Abstract:
A pre-planning appraisal was undertaken of the site. The assessment identified a low to moderate archaeological potential within the area of the Freeman's Park Campus proposal site. There may have been potential for prehistoric occupation along with the greater likelihood of potential Roman roadside settlement activity within the proposal site. The proposal site was situated very close to the line of the Roman Tripontium Road and the Raw Dykes Roman aqueduct. The map research identified a post-medieval clay pit within the boundaries of the proposal site. This site was considered to be of minor significance, though it would have undoubtedly removed any earlier archaeological deposits in the south-eastern portion of the proposal site. The degree of damage and disturbance to potential underlying archaeological deposits in the remainder of the area of the proposal site was likely to have been varied. There would have been a greater effect from the deep foundations of the modern Southfield campus buildings dating to the 1970s. Conversely, the map research demonstrated that the proposal site was occupied by open ground with enclosed open fields until at least the late 19th century before being replaced by smaller allotment gardens until at least the 1950s, so there would have been a potential for greater preservation of archaeological potential in areas of open ground between the modern buildings. The setting of the Grade II* church of All Souls located to the immediate west of the proposal site would be affected by development on the proposal site. The setting of the Grade II Registered Historic Park and Garden of the Welford Road cemetery would remain unaffected by potential development. [Au(abr)]
