Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated which revealed a cross section through the eastern defences of Norbury Camp, an Iron Age hill fort immediately to the west of the study area. The defences were found to consist of a vestigial inner rampart, survivng as an earthwork 0.5 metres high and at least 6 metres wide, an inner ditch 10 metres wide and at least 2.5 metres deep. No Iron Age material was recovered from these ditches, but substantial quantities of pottery of 12th/13th century date were recovered from a series of pits to the east, outside the ramparts. These medieval features may have reflected the western extent of the shrunken village of Farmington, visible as earthworks to the north-east. [Au] |
