Abstract: |
An evaluation, comprising the excavation of three trenches, was undertaken in advance of urgently required underpinning of the northern part of the eastern walls of the church chancel. The excavations revealed that the eastern end of the chancel is built, at least in part, on disturbed ground. A definitive relationship between the chancel and the eastern end of the nave was not established - at foundation level this had been masked by a concrete plinth whilst the structural relationship above had been masked by recent pointing. Evidence of pre-present chancel foundation building activity in the vicinity was identified, perhaps suggesting that the current structure was not the original (Norman) one. [Au(adp)] |
