Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment of the site found that it lay within the historic medieval core of Hertford, and formed part of a waterfront which may have been occupied since the earliest period of the towns history. Early maps demonstrated that the area was built up by the 17th century, focused on the old market place at Old Cross, but the fortunes of the area had fluctuated, and, at times, may have been unoccupied. From the late 18th century onwards, the present maltings structure was constructed to the north around Barder's Yard. The assessment area formed part of a wharf and was characterised by the several 19th century industrial buildings which were demolished in the late 1790s. Archaeologically little cartographic or historical evidence linked disturbance through building with the central part of the site, and the area may have retained stratified deposits of some significance, in common with many similar waterfront sites.
