Abstract:
The watching brief revealed a consistent soil profile over most of the site: beneath modern concrete a fairly uncontaminated layer of fine sand and some gravel overlaying a red/brown silt/sand. This contrasted markedly with the results of the monitoring of trenches to the east, which tended to show a considerable build up of dark loam. Two exceptions to the pattern were a wall footing, perhaps 18th -19th century, and a small disturbance containing mortared flint nodules, which both occurred in the northernmost trench. It was considered unwise to draw firm conclusions from the results of this monitoring. However, viewed in the light of the first recorded evidence of the town wall, it was possible to interpret the 'fine silt and sand' as the remnants of the town bank created by the excavation of a ditch which predated St Andrews Street. The small cluster of flints may have been medieval in date and it was possible that they were the surviving fragments of the wall. [Au(adp)]
