Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a planning condition. The examination of the SMR revealed that little archaeological material had been recovered from the vicinity of the site. However, within Blackwater Valley, a wealth of archaeological material, varying from Iron Age through to Roman and medieval had been located. The river would have been a valuable natural resource to the early settlers and would have provided well-drained ground on which to settle. No archaeological material had been found specifically within the site, but this might be a result of poor surveying during earlier development. Cartographic evidence revealed that the land was undeveloped heathland until the 20th century. The Basingstoke Canal was built in the late 18th century, possibly causing significant disturbance during its construction. [Au(adp)] |
