Abstract:
A survey was undertaken of the motte and bailey castle at Mynydd-Brith on behalf of English Heritage and the landowners. The most comprehensive previous survey of the site had been undertaken in 1952, and it was clear from recent records and field visits that considerable alterations had occurred to the site during the 1970s and 1980s despite the fact that the site has been protected through scheduling since 1972 (County Monument no. Here & Worc 184). The aim of the survey was to record the current state of the site to enable comparisons to be made with the earlier survey, to attempt to identify areas of unauthorised excavation, and to facilitate future management of the site. The project clearly demonstrated that a number of changes had occurred. Whereas the 1952 survey recorded no visible walls, there are now a number of walls exposed, mainly on the motte but also elsewhere on the site. In addition, some erosion of the turf cover has occurred and there is more tree and scrub cover on the site than in 1952, especially on the sides of the motte. A previously recorded field boundary wall has been demolished. During the course of the project further earthworks which are likely to be associated with the motte and bailey were observed to the south-east of the scheduled area, along with a number of pieces of reused masonry probably dating from the 12th or 13th century.[AIP]
