Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a new fire station, which lay within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. Significant archaeological remains had been recorded in the vicinity of the site, and parts of the nationally important middle Saxon town of Hamwic lay nearby, to the south. During the evaluation, a demolition layer of 19th century masonry was observed which overlay a buried ploughsoil which contained post-medieval brick and tile towards the top, but was sterile at lower levels. No archaeological features were observed, and no artefacts were recovered. [Au(adp)] |
