Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in relation to the proposed development of the site, which lay within a Conservation Area and Area of Archaeological Potential. Although no SAMs fell within the site, several SMR record entries did. The site lay above the Walbrook River, in an area with exceptionally well preserved, investigated and documented remains. Timber revetments were known to exist beneath the subject site, and it was thought that a high status Roman building was situated immediately south-west of the development. A major Roman road probably crossed the southern portion of the site. Whilst the potential for archaeological deposits within the site was considered high, the impact of the proposed development on undisturbed ground would be minimal. The new building would only extend the current foundations by c.2m on the front and 3m towards the rear of the King's Arms Yard building along the extent of the existing structure. Given the close proximity of the new foundations to the present structure, it may have been that these areas had already been truncated. [Au(abr)] |
