Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the initial groundworks for a residential development fronting onto Holgate Road. The underpinning of a boundary wall was also observed, as was the stripping of an area for a car park. Although a fairly large area of what appeared to be the natural subsoil was recorded, no features, structures, or deposits of pre-medieval date were noted and it was suspected that the known medieval agriculture activity on the site may have destroyed any earlier stratigraphy formerly present. Similarly it appeared that modern activity had removed much, if not all, of the post-medieval stratigraphy and in places some of the medieval agricultural soils. [Au(abr)] |
