Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the possible site options, proposed for a flow gauging station and associated stilling wells and site compound on the River Windrush, was undertaken. A number of the site options were found to be located within the Scheduled area around Bourton Bridge (SAM 180). Excavations in 1958-59 under the bed of the River Windrush had identified the remains of a paved ford and the base of stone bridge piers, and two of the site compound options were located in the area of the posting station or mansio of the Roman settlement, whilst a third was located on the alignment of a Roman road. Trial boreholes on the south of the River Windrush were also observed and produced material probably relating to the Roman settlement. [AIP] |
