Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in response to proposals to clear soil and vegetation from the inside of Jesmond Mill. Where the evaluation showed that natural bedrock within Area A2 (trench one) was located only 0.03m below the ground surface, full excavation of this area was undertaken. This revealed a gully adjacent to the north-west wall. Trench 2, within Area A3, contained two walls, one of which was the external eastern wall of the first phase of the mill. It was uncertain whether this wall remained in use as an internal wall, or if it was knocked down when Area A3 was added to the building. Another wall within this trench was probably associated with the internal wheel mechanisms and contained a square stone with a square slot cut into it. The trench within Area D was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.15m with only the topsoil being observed. [Au(adp)] |
