Abstract: |
A small rescue excavation on the site of St Ebbas Chapel exposed part of a 1m diameter circular structure, formed of coursed rough stone blocks. This was initially conjectured to be a hearth. Further excavation however, found no associated charcoal or ash suggesting that the stonework, although extensively reddened, almost certainly formed part of a well. Archaeomagnetic analysis showed that the stone may have indeed been subject to heating. [Au(abr)] |
