Abstract: |
An assessment of historical and archaeological information indicated that the site due for redevelopment was located in an area of high archaeological potential. No information regarding pre-medieval activity was discovered. Although the name of the area gave some indication of Saxon settlement in the vicinity, the focus of settlement was more likely to be near the historic core of Wapping, some 500m downstream. The sources suggested that the site lay within a developing settlement, which by late medieval to post-medieval times had become a well-established area reliant upon shipping. Basements were expected to have destroyed some of the archaeology, but a field evaluation was still recommended. [Au(adp)] |
