Abstract: |
A measured and photographic survey of Penyard Castle, Ross Rural, was undertaken on behalf of English Heritage in order to produce a record of the existing condition of the monument, and from the visible evidence to comment on the structural development of the site, preparatory to any discussion concerning a management agreement between the owners and English Heritage. The survey identified five principal structural elements into which Penyard Castle may be divided: the fragmentary remains of the keep, the undercroft, the north wall of the cottage, part of the east wall of the cottage, and all the remaining individual components that it was not possible to allocate to a particular period. The survey demonstrated that the castle and the subsequent cottage were not discrete and that any programme of conservation or restoration should take account of this.[AIP] |
