Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed scheme of development within the British Museum identified that the site lay in an area of archaeological potential. Remains recorded in the vicinity included several Lower Palaeolithic handaxes, the postulated lines of two Roman roads, two Roman cremations, evidence of Saxon activity, medieval features and the documented sites of medieval buildings. A line of Civil War defences was thought to have crossed the site, and remains relating to a late 17th century house and gardens, Montagu House, were anticipated. It was noted that previous construction work at the site would have affected any archaeological remains, but that the impact of the proposed development would be relatively limited. Monitoring of site investigations and groundworks was recommended. [AIP] |
