Abstract: |
The archaeological evaluation recorded structural remains of an early 19th century 'Coach Manufactory' and more recent structures. A layer of clayey slit with few inclusions predated the 19th century buildings. This was the remains of alluvial soil build-up associated with the River Twyver. An underground oil tank (currently filled with water) was located in the south corner of the site. This may have been the source of ground contamination by oil, located at 1.9m below the surface in trench one and 1.5m below the surface in trench two. Excavation was halted at these levels, giving final maximum trench depths of 13.42m and 13.61m AOD, respectively. All archaeological features or deposits encountered were of post-medieval or modern date. [Au(adp)] |
