Abstract: |
A topographic survey was carried out to establish whether visible earthworks on the site were related to a nearby deserted medieval village. Subsequently a series of ten trenches were excavated in order to further investigate the features revealed by the survey. Ridge and furrow cultivation was identified on the site, as well as former field boundaries surviving as upstanding earthworks, no medieval or earlier buried features or artefacts were recovered. No positive dating evidence for the field system was recovered, however, several of the other earthwork features were shown to be of post-medieval date. The site of a former air raid shelter and a Second World War anti-aircraft position were also identified. A concrete pill box also survived on the site and this was recorded in detail.[Au(abr)] |
