Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out at a development site within Guildford, a town which had first been established as a defended commercial centre in the 10th century. A partially exposed length of chalk walling of probable post-medieval date which formed part of a basement was noted, and loose soils containing Victorian or early 20th century material, possibly associated with a drainage feature, were observed. A possible pit, perhaps of post-medieval origin, was also seen. It was concluded that if any material of archaeological interest had existed at the site, it had probably been removed or disturbed by 20th century use if the site. [AIP] |
