Abstract: |
An archaeological and historical appraisal of a large area around Chapel Street and Drury Lane, on the western side of Rugby town centre, was undertaken in connection with the preparation of proposals for redevelopment of the site. The area in question lies immediately to the north west of Rugby's medieval market place, a focus of the medieval town. The historical research was designed to produce an account of the development of the area from the medieval period to the present day; the work entailed the preparation of a series of maps showing the built up area at different dates, and a map showing the evidence for cellars and other below ground structures which would have destroyed surviving archaeological deposits. A rapid external survey of the existing buildings in the area was also carried out, in order to identify any of historical or architectural significance. The results of the research suggest that Drury Lane represents the west side of the 13th century market place and that properties along its western frontage would have been laid out and built up in the medieval period. Late medieval encroachments onto the market place seem to have transferred the main market place frontage onto Sheep Street, reducing Drury Lane's importance, with the result that the properties along it declined and were amalgamated into about seven or eight blocks. These were again subdivided during the 17th-19th centuries and a number of the existing boundaries date to this later period. Chapel Street and the former West Street seem also to have been of early origin but only the eastern end of Chapel Street was built up before the 19th century. The area contains two Grade II Listed Buildings, both in Chapel Street.[AIP] |
