Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in pursuance of a planning application to redevelop the site. The evaluation involved the opening of seven machine-excavated trenches. Five of the trenches revealed natural brickearth and terrace gravels and no archaeological deposits. Trenches 1 and 3 revealed organic deposits which appeared to be the fills of a linear channel running north-west/south-east across the site. Both worked flint and pottery were collected from the deposits in Trench 3. The pottery was Bronze Age, whilst the flint ranged from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age periods. In light of the above discoveries a further trench was excavated in an attempt to define the channel feature in the centre of the site. This trench revealed an archaeological horizon, although no cut features were visible. It was decided to leave this horizon in situ and no further work was done in this trench. A watching brief was also carried out on the pad foundation excavations but the pad excavated was not deep enough to affect the archaeological horizon and the work was abandoned. [Au(abr)] |
