Abstract: |
The new development would include the construction of a five-storey extension with mezzanine level and single level of basement to a depth of 2.37m OD. The current basement upon the site would be extended to the south to connect with the annex building. The site was located with in an Archaeological Priority Area but did not contain any SAMs or Listed Buildings. There was little evidence of activity occurring in the vicinity of the proposed development site until the post-medieval period when the area began to develop. Prior to this the area consisted of marsh land. The site remained as open land until the middle of the 19th century. It was likely that very little in terms of archaeology existed upon the site apart from the possibility of palaeo-environmental evidence dating to the prehistoric period, as found in numerous excavations in the area, and the possibility of post-medieval building foundations which may have existed in some areas of the site. Geotechnical investigations conducted upon the site revealed made ground of concrete and brick at a depth of between 2.80 and 4.70m below ground level. Therefore made ground existed at a depth of between approximately 2.00m OD and -10m OD as existing ground level appeared to be roughly around 4.70 and 4.80 OD. The brick probably represented the demolition of buildings which existed upon the site in the late 19th century. Dark grey organic silty clay with pockets of peat was found between depths of 3.40m and 4.70m below ground level, directly underlying the made ground. As the depth of the basements would reach a depth of 2.37m OD it seemed unlikely that the silty clay deposits containing pockets of peat would be affected. It was therefore recommended that an archaeological watching brief be conducted upon any piling foundations carried out during construction, with the possibility of environmental sampling of the peat if a large enough area is opened up for the peat to be sampled without contamination.
