Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The assessment found that the site lay on land which was formerly divided between a large open common known as Rushy Green and arable land belonging to the former Effra Farm. There were few known archaeological sites in the area. Effra Road was created in 1810 following the enclosure of the remaining common land, and speculative house building followed soon after. A large house was constructed on the site in c.1840, and was added to by the 1930s with a small glove factory to the rear. Much of the area was devastated by the explosion of a 'doodlebug' in nearby Trelawn Road during the Second World War, and subsequent rebuilding transformed the surrounding townscape. The factory building continued to occupy the site until recent demolition. [Au(abr)] |
