Abstract: |
The study indicated that, although there were no known archaeological sites or finds from the proposal area itself, the site lay immediately adjacent to the Roman road of Watling Street, at a junction with a minor road (Theobald Street) which may have had later medieval origins. A Second World War pillbox was thought to have stood close to this road junction but it had been levelled and its exact location was unknown. There were no other deposits in the immediate vicinity of the site but a number of Roman kilns and other finds were present at a slightly greater distance. The cartographic study had shown that the site had not been extensively and repeately developed although some rebuilding of the main structure on the site, including a basement, had taken place. Below-ground tanks may have been added. The site included a small segment of land adjacent to Tykes Water. Low-lying settings, such as river edge or terrace edge locations were favoured for earlier prehistoric occupation. [Au(adp)] |
