Abstract:
Salvage recording and building recording were undertaken on the site of a medieval aisled barn on land adjacent to St Mary's Church, Kings Pyon. The partial remains of this major manorial barn of the 13th century were due to be incorporated into a larger building for conversion to residential use. The standing remains comprise only one complete bay of the original barn, together with part of another, with many timbers of the original structure missing or replaced in the post-medieval period. Geophysical survey identified a number of areas of archaeological interest, but could not confirm the south-eastward extent of the barn. Archaeological observations demonstrated the absence of any floor layers of the barn due to farmyard erosion; however, sleeper walls extended into bay 3. Evidence was also recovered to date St Mary's churchyard wall to the late medieval or early post-medieval period. An inhumation outside the churchyard wall might indicate a contraction of the boundary, or a deliberate burial close to, but outside, consecrated ground. Earlier features were also identified; these included an east-west aligned ditch within the area of bays 2 and 3, a hollow way or pond, and a (possibly prehistoric) pit containing crop processing waste.[AIP]
