Abstract:
During the summer of 2004 Lewes underwent a large scale flood alleviation scheme which involved the laying of a new sewer system. A trench was excavated which cut through a substantial chalk layer. A 1m thick layer directly below the ground surface contained fragments of animal bone, 17th-19th century earthenware and fragments of brick and tile, suggesting domestic rubbish build up. The chalk surface was interpreted as a probable road surface. [Au(adp)]
