Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of the service renewal as the proposed works lay within the line of Hadrian's Wall. A deposit of black silty clay was encountered, which probably represented the upper fill of the wall ditch. The wall ditch was known from antiquarian sources and in nearby excavations it had survived, in places, into the post-medieval period, as a shallow ditch and its latest filling often consisted of a distinctive deposit of black silty clay.
